Iraq's Bronevik Brigade has replaced American M1A1 Abrams tanks with Russian T-90S main battle tanks, possibly for geopolitical reasons.

The exchange comes after US officials complained that Abrams tanks had fallen into the hands of Iran-backed militias and could be a way for Russia to gain more influence in the region.

"I think this decision is at least a catalyst by addressing that issue," said James Phillips, senior fellow for Middle East affairs at the Heritage Foundation.

Iraqi officials said Russian tank experts retrained officers and armored personnel from the 35th Mechanized Brigade on the new equipment. The media did not mention whether the people helping with the retraining were Russian military officials or industrial contractors.
