Sig 516 Rifle - The SIG-Sauer 516 Sport Patrol is a semi-automatic short-stroke piston system carbine chambered in .223 Remington, which in turn is derived from the popular AR15 platform.
Introduced at the 2010 Shot Show, SIG-Sauer's 516 rifle is available today in a variety of configurations, in legal semi-auto configurations for civilians and limited-fire, military/police models. Chambered in .223 Remington and 7.62x39 Russian, the 516 rifle also spawned an "older brother" 716 chambered in .308 Winchester / 7.62x51mm NATO.
Sig 516 Rifle
The 516 rifle is based on the classic AR-15 platform, refined and enriched with a number of design features, the most important of which is the introduction of a short-stroke gas piston and thrust system with a completely redesigned sliding frame group. .
Sig Sauer Sig516: The Ultimate Ar 15 Style Rifle For Reliability And Performance
The design retains many of the existing "standard" parts and dimensions to maintain a measure of compatibility with other AR-based products - the entire piston-operated upper receiver is actually available as a complete part from the manufacturer to upgrade the customer's own AR . 15 to the advanced SIG-Sauer system.
The base of the front sight has been replaced by a gas block that houses a short-stroke piston and is topped by a short Picatinny rail. Note the bayonet protrusion
Originally only available in the United States, the 516 has since also been produced in Germany for the European market and is available on the "Old Continent" for purchase in select configurations.
The 516 configuration we feature in our review is the civilian semi-automatic Sport "Patrol" model chambered in .223 Remington.
Sig Sauer Sig516 5.56mm Rifle, 16″ Barrel, Excellent Condition
For legal issues in those European countries where the barrel length must be at least 420mm to be considered "sporty" like in Germany, the 516 Sport barrel is 16.6 inches long and has a standard 0.5x28TPI barrel thread. , which features a classic birdcage flame arrester that can easily be replaced with a variety of optional shutters, brakes or flame arresters.
The Model 516's open ejection port is 100% AR-15 standard in shape and size, providing extremely reliable ejection and cycle...
...although the shutter frame is fully patented, it lacks gas vents. Pay attention to the "civil" engraving, by which you can immediately recognize the civilian part
The cold forged barrel profile is optimized for precision, it is medium weight; it has 6 grooves with a 1:7" quick twist and the channel is chrome plated for long life.

The barrel is matte black nitride coated for excellent corrosion resistance and is completely free-floating in the patented fenced grip.
The front sight base on the barrel has been replaced with its own gas block that features a four-position adjustable gas valve.
The drive rod assembly includes a guide and a spring and uses an inverted piston in which the "tube" portion of the control valve injects gas into the rod, which acts as a gas cylinder.
Excess gas is discharged through a series of holes around the cylinder, and a series of three small gas rings at the tip of the nozzle ensure reliability and proper duty cycle.

The gas block also has a standard bayonet tip, however, the non-standard barrel length at the front of the block does not allow the bayonet ring to engage the flame arrester.
SIG-Sauer 516 semi-automatic carbine in our short battle test. In some European markets, the Magpul stock and grip have been replaced by FAB Defense products; the folding "iron" sight mounted on the firearm is an ARMS Polymer #71L BUIS kit and the optical sight is an Aimpoint Micro T1 with an American Defense locking lever
One of the 516's strong points is its fully machined 7075-T6 aluminum front end. Constructed using an upper and lower 'shell' which are attached to the upper receiver by a series of hex bolts to form a very strong and stable system, the end result is that the whole assembly for all practical purposes works the same as a monolithic top; the barrel is free-floating and the only point of contact is the three gas rings in the gas cylinder/drive rod, which in turn is located at the top of the forearm.
The stock has four attachment points for standard button connectors, two on each side at either end of the Picatinny rails. All slots are numbered for easy change of optics and accessories.

On the left side of the receiver are common AR firearm controls that are easily operated by the shooter
The upper receiver is a reinforced but otherwise apparently standard "flat top" with a few internal modifications to accommodate the fully shielded bolt frame and an indexing cut machined into the front end of the upper rail to properly align the forearm with the rails. and thrust op-rod system.
The heart of the 516 is a beautifully machined slide frame with an integrated piston key. Machined from a CNC-machined steel billet, the bolt frame features a frictionless finish and specially designed geometry to improve cycling, reliability and other receiver wear patterns caused by the off-center vector induced by the short-stroke piston pushing the bolt carrier to group back during firing, compared to by the perfectly co-axial vectoring of the flat gas system of the regular AR15 - what is conventionally called "slanted mount wear".
The bolt used is a standard Milspec part, down to the use of gas rings on the tail of the bolt, which are now only needed to increase drag inside the BCG; the same applies to the cam and firing pin.
Do It All Sig Sauer Rifles
The version of the SIG-Sauer 516 Patrol rifle we tested used a standard lower receiver, rather than the more feature-rich American version, which has a custom-designed lower with two machined hand points for attaching the standard release button connectors on the rear. boxes and various other improvements including a spring system to limit the clearance between the upper and lower receivers.
The SIG-Sauer 516 rail carbine is made from the same 7075-T6 alloy as the firearm's magazine, while the gas block, which houses the "reversed" piston and short-stroke rod, is made from carbon steel
The position of the pin and the geometry of the joint between the lower and upper part of the 516 rifle are completely standard, and the upper part can be changed; as noted above, SIG-Sauer actually offers for sale a complete 516 upper magazine assembly to upgrade existing AR15 rifles to their own gas system.
The package is complemented by a Magpul MOE (Magpul Original Equipment) folding stock and pistol grip, which has been replaced by FAB Defense products in some markets. It's the same with the magazine; in the US the magazine is the 30-round Magpul PMAG, in Europe it has been replaced by the shorter 20-round (limited to 10 in some countries) OA-MAG made in Germany by Oberland Arms.

Our opinion of the ergonomics and control position of the 516 stems from our belief that back in the 1960s the AR15 set the standard against which any assault rifle should be compared, in other words, near perfection.
On the other hand, none of the controls work at the same time, and the trigger could be better—the rifle we live-fired with had terrible recoil and a "sticky" trigger.
During our brief live shooting test at the range, we experienced smooth shooting without any misses over hundreds of rounds fired by multiple shooters.
Sig 516 G2 Patrol Rifle Black
Handling is good, although the 516's barrel is a bit heavy, but it does help tame slight barrel twist during rapid fire drills.
Accuracy is excellent and the recoil feel is different than the stock M4, it feels a bit sharper but also softer, although the latter may be due to the heavier weight of the rifle compared to our "regular" M4.
Excellent fit and finish, first class materials used, and the rifle feels solid, reliable and accurate.
It should also be noted that in the near future all production will take place in the USA, so all civilian 516 rifles will be "made in USA" and imported into Europe.

Key Point: Sig Sauer appears to be leaving the rifle in the dark in favor of the newer SIG MCX in marketing and promotion.
When HK released the HK416 in the early 2000s, it quickly became a hit with elite military and police forces around the world. Driven by a slick marketing campaign and favorable (albeit controversial) US military test results, the HK416 was for many users the "top mouse" version of the AR rifle family. Although the merits of the HK416 have become debatable in recent years, with upgrades to traditional AR rifles increasing their reliability, Sig Sauer, Inc. he tried to create his answer to HK416 in
