I'm under a B-1 Lancer. It is one of my favorite planes, and yet, despite visiting aviation museums all over the world, I have never seen it in person. Not only that, this is an even rarer B-1A. Capable of Mach 2.2, here it is in all its speedy glory, swinging wings.
True, I came to the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum in Denver to see this craft, but there is much more to this museum. In front is a B-52 flying on a pedestal. Next to the B-1 there is an F-111, itself together with an F-14: a trio of supersonic swinging wings.
The idea behind the B-1 was to combine the payload of the B-52 and the speed of the B-58 into one aircraft so that the US Air Force could retire both. In its final version, it was slower than the second and will be left behind from the old one.
The version in the museum is the B-1A, one of the four prototypes that flew first in the 70s. I saw it in person, I didn't really understand how it happened.

This. It is almost 150 feet long, almost as long as a B-52 or 767-200. It has three large bombs and, of course, the iconic movable wings.
The B-1A was not very successful. It went way over budget, and the role for which it was designed was quickly fulfilled by faster and cheaper cruise missiles. There was the then new MiG-25, which could theoretically intercept the B-1 and make the bomber's speed irrelevant (it had a longer range at low speeds). In 1977, President Jimmy Carter canceled the program.
The Rockwell manufacturer was undeterred and continued testing. In 1982, the Reagan administration ordered a slightly different version of the B-1. The modified B-1B had a lower overall top speed (Mach 1.25) but a higher subsonic top speed. Redesigned as a low-altitude, high-speed bomber. It fulfilled this role successfully: one of three bombers that the Air Force still uses today. Others are the B-52 and the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, which began life in the Advanced Technology Bomber project initiated by Carter more than 70 years ago. While unknown at the time, B-2 may have been one of the reasons he canceled the original B-1 program.
Most of the B-1Bs still fly. Only one B-1A survives at the Strategic Air Command Museum in Ashland, Nebraska.

The B-1A is the crown jewel of Wings Over the Rockies, but it's not the only jewel. There is also an F-111 and an F-14, both winged beauties swinging in their own right.
The B-52B in front is an absolutely stunning RB version that can carry a 300 pound scout pod plus eight additional crew to operate it.
Then there are a few Century Series fighters in great shape. Little more than a short-winged machine, the F-104 Starfighter is always a sight to behold. He sits next to an F-102 Delta Dart and an F-100 with a guppy mouth. There aren't many military propeller planes - the most notable are the Beechcraft UC-45 Expeditor and the Douglas B-18 Bolo.
Wings Over the Rockies impresses not only for its incredibly rare B-1A, but also for the impeccable condition of all its craft. Some examples of the museum are in the best condition of all the museums I have visited
