The World War II Aviation Museum recently added 15 planes to its fleet — planes on loan to the building from businessman Jim Slattery's encyclopedic collection of flying machines.

Slattery said his interest in airplanes began as a child, and displaying his collection will help remember World War II and those who survived the Normandy landings.
Museum director Bill Klaers said the fleet on display tells the story of World War II aircraft from the beginning of the war to the development of space born through combat.

"This aircraft is temporary," Klaers said as he pointed to the aluminum fuselage attached to the factory wings of the Grumman F3F-2 fighter jet.
The cargo ship, one of only three remaining in the world, was a major naval fighter at the beginning of World War II, but became obsolete when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
A great replacement for Grumman and other pre-war designs that were rolled out of American factories after the nation entered the war. The cornucopia of artifacts includes aircraft such as the museum's B-25 Mitchell bomber.
Twin-engine Mitchells were deployed from aircraft carriers in the 1942 Doolittle Raid, which was the first American attack on Japanese territory after Pearl Harbor.

The main focus of the museum is on the genius of the American engineers who built the planes. Exhibits include a disassembled P-47 Thunderbolt that shows the plane's supercharger.
John Henry, a spokesman for the museum, said the planes came from various groups that wanted to teach new generations about the war.

Visitors can also tour Klaers' WestPac Restorations, where modern aircraft have been recreated, including a twin-engine P-38.

The museum, 755 Aviation Way in Colorado Springs, is extending hours so people can see the new additions. Tours are available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays throughout the summer. The tour starts at 10 am.
