The Museum's collection of military, commercial and experimental aircraft is diverse. Must-sees include the Convair F2Y Sea Dart, F-14 Tomcat and a full replica Wright Flyer.

This exhibit displays a collection of engines that represent the innovations in propulsion that have occurred over the past century. Not-to-be-missed artifacts include the interactive Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major and the complex ion engine used by spacecraft that explore deep space. You'll discover how the realm of flight took to the skies higher, faster, and more efficiently than even Da Vinci could have imagined.

Join our email list and stay up to date with all the great things happening in Florida's sweetest place. We love finding hidden gems, and the Florida Air Museum is definitely one of them. Located on the grounds of Lakeland Linder Airport, it is a small complex with a large number of aircraft.

When you first arrive, you'll notice that the area is packed with many different types of aircraft. Jet planes, propeller boats and even helicopters are parked on site.

We are big fans of airplanes. We actually blogged about our trip in a Ford tri engine plane. In addition, we observed Aviation Week in August. We listed three more museums in that article. The Florida Aviation Museum eluded us until this trip.

Once inside, we were greeted by a young man named Luke. He took the time to give us a map and show us where some of the planes were both inside and outside. Obviously, it's a rotating collection, so each visit you'll have the opportunity to see some new exhibits along with some of the permanent exhibits.

We observed several planes parked around the complex. The interior was also filled with various aircraft. There were biplanes and monoplanes. There were aircraft displays and an aviation memorabilia display. For both the aviation enthusiast and casual observer, we can guarantee hours of seeing and doing.

Yes, there are many things to do. There are numerous skill testing machines. "Can you land a plane without seeing the ground", "How planes change altitude" and "Ever wondered how a plane turns" are just a few of the exhibits we could apply our skills and knowledge to.

Inside the museum, several displays of airframes begged our inspection. We look inside the cockpit of an old Eastern Airlines airliner that fits (very small) people. There is a cockpit of a MiG-21 aircraft and a section of the fuselage showing the interior of the B-17 and B-29. That we could really walk.

In addition, we were drawn to the wall displays, showcases and even some covered surfaces. There's one saluting the Vietnam Air Corps, an air show wall of pioneers and innovators, one dedicated to airplane pioneer Howard Hughes, and a display of various types of propulsion, from propellers to jet engines.

One of the most impressive displays we've seen is the Florida Aviation Hall of Fame. Inside, we find the names of people who have made significant contributions and achievements in civil and/or military aviation and aerospace.

We also learned that Florida has its own "Lindburg". His name is Pete Souness. He worked out of Haines as an ambassador for Stinson Airplanes. He later founded several aviation clubs. The highlight was the Florida Flying Alligator Club. Apparently, to join you had to fly at least 100 miles over the Florida swamps.

If you have children, there is a corner where they can play. We saw that they installed an instrument panel where young people can "fly" an airplane to their heart's content. On the other side is a large mirror and a box of flying clothes that children can try on and see themselves as future aviators.

There is also a table and benches where young people can sit and paint. We saw a shelf with sheets of paper that marked the outlines of the planes. Next to them are giant boxes of crayons. The corner exterior is lined with comfortable couches for the parents.

There were no guys when we were there, but we still sat for a while before catching our tour.

There's room for kids to create, learn a little, and burn off some energy while parents or grandparents rest.

As we said, there are many planes around the building itself. Some of them are fixed in place. Others, it appeared, had been towed away or were in the process of being accommodated in their temporary location.

Again, we were intrigued by both the size and reach of the screens. While there, we saw a Grumman F-14-D Tomcat and an XFV-1, also known as "The Salmon". That plane is made for vertical takeoff and landing.

We also saw the "pacemaker of Tampa Bay." It's a Boeing 727. Luke told us he uses the Aerospace Center of Excellence next door. The plane is used as a learning laboratory. He told us it was the only fully functional Boeing 727 classroom in the United States.

An experimental jet plane built by William Gunn was parked next to it. I actually saw it fly one year at the Sun 'n Fun Fly-in held every year in Lakeland.

We're here to tell you that the Florida Air Museum is worth a visit. Designated Florida's "Official Aviation Museum and Education Center," we found it intriguing and entertaining. We learned a lot and actually could have spent a lot more time there.

The exhibits are well laid out. They easily took us from one place to another by providing large amounts of information disguised as entertainment. We learn the history of aviation. There were views and information about some of the people who made it possible.

We were treated to air missions and reckless pilots. Aircraft ranged from lighter-than-air aircraft to jet aircraft. There was an opportunity to play and see unique artifacts.

And finally, greetings to one of our friends. Air ace, wing presenter, reverse and a really cool guy.
